==> Why do you think order is important in reader's workshop?
==> Today I want you to think about what reader's workshop should look like and what it should sound like.
==> Make a chart of the children's suggestions. (Quiet, no walking around, no interrupting, busy brains, everybody
reading, working, etc)
==> Tell the children that we are going to try it for a few minutes and see how it goes. Have the kids go to their

Lesson: Building Stamina
==> Review yesterday's lesson about order.
==> Talk about what happened yesterday. What kinds of problems did they have?
==> Introduce the word stamina.
==> Have a child come up and start doing jumping jacks. It won't take long for them to tire.
==> Discuss how the child tired because they have very little stamina.
==> We build our stamina by exercising. If the child did jumping jacks every day then it would get easier and he would
be able to do more and more jumping jacks without getting tired.
==> We need to build our reading stamina too. We do this by exercising our brains and reading. The more we read, the
more stamina we are going to have.
==> Review reading workshop expectations again.
==> Tell the children that we are going to practice building our stamina. You want them to work hard for as long as
they can. When they hear the bell it will be their signal that they should come back to the gathering area.
==> Send kids back to tables to read. Stand back and watch. As soon as you notice kids off task, ring the bell and
bring them back.
==> Ask the kids how it went. What suggestions do they have? Add any new appropriate suggestions to the chart.
==> Send the kids back to practice building their stamina again.
==> Repeat this process several times. (But don't over do it.)

==> Review the care chart
==> Point out the books on the floor and suggest that we need to put them away.
==> Wonder aloud how you might know where to put them.
==> Many kids will have noticed that the books are numbered.
==> Look at the different numbers. Take the first book in the pile, look at the numbers and see if the kids can point
out where you should put it.
==> Tell the kids that there are a lot of books in this pile. That's a lot of work to put all those books way. Suggest
that you will just put them all in the bucket closest to you. See what they say.
==> Ask the kids why they think the buckets are numbered. (Makes it easier to find a book you want, helps keep the
books organized)
==> Have children help you return the books to the appropriate bins.
==> Remind children that even if it seems easier at the time, in the long run it wastes more time if books aren't where
they are supposed to be.

should do now.
==> Take out the second book and read it. Do the same with all of your books.
==> What should I do now? I read all of my books. Act alarmed.
==> Explain that when you finish all of your books you should go back and read them again.

==> Model a share- today I sounded out a new word. I didn't know the word so I started saying the first sound and
I did it!
==> Explain the share process. I will begin by asking someone in the circle if they would like to share. They must
answer with "yes, thank you or No, thank you"; The reader then stands and uses their sharing voice to share their

==> Discuss with the children what kinds of habits good readers have.
==> Make a chart
==> Over the next few days we will be talking about some habits that good readers must have.

==> They read at school, they read at home, they read in the morning they read in the afternoon, they read at bedtime,
they read for fun, they read to learn, they read to others, they listen to reading, they read stories and they read about
real things. They read, read, read!

==> What must someone do if they want to learn to play an instrument? PRATICE!
==> What happens if they never practice?
==> What do you think the band teacher would think if someone just came to class, but never tried to play?
==> What would he think if they only played when they were in class?
==> In order to become better readers we must practice!!! A LOT!!!

Lesson: Readers reread books they've already read
==> Why would I want to reread a book if I've already read it?
==> Pick up the instrument from yesterday. Try to play twinkle, twinkle.
==> Tell the kids, "well, I practiced this song once. I am ready to go onto a new and harder song." They
should tell you that you need to practice more because you made lots of mistakes.
==> When we reread a book it's like practicing a song. The more we read it the better we get at reading it.
==> Reader's don't just need to practice reading, they need to practice reading the same stories over and over again
until they get really good at them. Then they are ready to try a new and harder song.
